HLC2705-001 General Description

The HLC2705-001 from the 'HLC2705 Series' is an innovative infrared component that excels in detecting both the speed and direction of mechanical motion with exceptional accuracy. This versatile sensor is especially suitable for rotary and linear encoders, making it an ideal choice for applications like optical mice. The monolithic IC within the device comprises two narrow adjacent photodiodes, amplifier stages, and quadrature logic, all working together to provide two distinct outputs. The tachometer output, for instance, generates a low-level active pulse each time the "A" channel illumination surpasses a threshold level. Meanwhile, the direction output indicates a logic high or low depending on which channel is illuminated first. With its sensitivity compensation circuitry, the sensor ensures reliable performance across varying temperatures. Housed in a molded black plastic package, the sensor allows IR energy transmission while preventing interference from visible light. The tachometer output features an NPN collector connected to Vcc via a 10 kOhm resistor, while the direction output is configured in a totem-pole style, capable of directly driving TTL loads. The HLC2705 can generate two tachometer pulses for each mechanical period of the interrupter, providing impressive resolution down to 0.018 inches (0.457 mm)
